SUMMARY:September meeting
DESCRIPTION:What might your gut bacteria have to do with healthy weight\, digestive balance\, a longer life\, and brain function?\nJoin us to hear from two of Nashville’s own experts who will share their perspectives on how our gut microbiome affects our health. \nDr. Howard R. Mertz has been a partner in Nashville Gastrointestinal Specialists since 2003 and a Clinical Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt. He is also the past President of the Tennessee Society for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy (TSGE). \n \nDr. David Shifrin is a member of the American Society for Cell Biology and the author of numerous scientific articles on host-microbe interactions in the small intestine and the mechanics of intestinal absorption of nutrients. He worked in research at Vanderbilt for nine years\, His graduate research focused on host-microbe interactions in the small intestine\, specifically\, how a strain of pathogenic E. coli induces changes to cells lining the intestine and how those cells respond to the attack. Through this work\, he developed a more general interest in how intestinal bacteria affect human physiology. \n \nEach of our speakers will make a short presentation on the latest research on the microbiome and then we will have plenty of time to ask questions. This is an important topic for us so we hope that you will make plans to come to hear the latest in research and treatment. The public is invited\, so please ask your friends\, family\, and work colleagues to come to the special presentation. \nThis meeting will be held at the Centennial Women’s Hospital Medical Building (M.O.B.) Auditorium located at the northwest corner of 22nd Ave. N. and Patterson\, just behind the bus stop shelter. The door faces the corner and is set back with bushes on both sides.
